Harold Matzner was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1937. Born in 1937 in Newark, New Jersey, to a poor family, Harold tried to help his parents by doing anything he could, from selling dog food door-to-door to delivering daily newspapers. His father worked for the Works Progress Administration, which supplied jobless people with low-wage public works jobs. Matzner and his parents shared a fifth-floor walk-up apartment with his maternal grandfather, an Orthodox Jewish cantor and Hebrew instructor.
